Description

The Master of Science Maschinenbau programme deepens and expands knowledge and skills in the analysis, design, simulation, optimisation and construction of technical systems. In addition to the classic lectures and exercises, the programme also includes application-oriented forms of learning, including a practical mechanical engineering tutorial and industry-related advanced design projects, through which students can gain initial experience in basic and applied research. In the project area, it is also possible to choose the option of a twelve-week external project work in industry and thus to apply the theoretical knowledge to the professional world while still studying.

Due to the great freedom of choice in the Master's degree, students decide for themselves whether they would like to receive a broad education in general mechanical engineering or choose one of the following specialisations offered:

  • Sustainable Use of Resources
  • Clean Energy and Process Engineering
  • Future Automotive Systems
  • Digital Based Production and Robotics

Internship There is no compulsory internship for the Master's programme in Mechanical Engineering. However, there is the option of external project work in industry, which can be incorporated into the degree programme. More information can be found in the module handbook.

Mechanical Engineering is one of the leading branches of industry in Germany. Internationally the picture is similar; mechanical engineers are in demand on a global scale.

Mechanical engineers take on primarily the development, construction, planning and building of technical facilities and machines. Therefore, they typically work in engineering facilities and with companies that deliver equipment for these facilities, or in engineering firms.

Depending on their area of specialisation, engineers deal with automotive technology, production technology, energy technology, electrical mechanics, aviation technology, product development and mechatronics. This list reflects only a small range of the many and various options open to graduates.

Employers of mechanical engineers may include industrial firms, engine manufacturers, surveying and assaying/inspection institutes, engineering firms, consulting firms and the automotive industry. Atypical career choices are also options for mechanical engineers, however, including technical journalism and technical communications.

For this reason it is important to start early in the degree programme to gain practical work experience in relevant organisations. In this way students can promote themselves as competent professionals in practice and make important professional contacts. The likelihood of finding a good position is definitely heightened if the student is flexible when it comes to commuting or even moving abroad. Good English language skills are particularly important when it comes to the international job market.
