The Master of Arts in Sociology has its focus on research and is designed to both deepen and broaden the knowledge and skills necessary to analyse social behaviour and to apply the empirical research methods acquired during the Bachelor of Arts. Another focus is the cooperative context or teaching and learning as can be seen from the majority of seminars over lectures. A research project prepares for the writing of the Master’s thesis. Students have the choice of specialising in one of three focal areas of sociology and to participate in a research colloquium. The overall goal is to lay the groundwork for students to follow an academic or professional career in the field of sociology.

Admittance to the Master of Arts programme requires that students must have already completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in the same area, or possess an equivalent degree. Admittance to the Master of Arts degree may also be contingent upon other additional requirements. Requirements specific to this degree programme may be found here and in the competences description.
Internship A job-related internship is optional and may be accredited (15 CP) as part of the compulsory optional subject.

Upon successful completion of a Master of Arts degree, there is the opportunity to begin working towards a Ph.D. either at the Technical University of Darmstadt or at another national or international university: Ph.D. at Technical University of Darmstadt

The job market for sociologists is generally broad and varied. The majority of career opportunities are available at universities and institutes, or in the teaching and researching of history. In addition, positions may be available in archives or in cultural institutions, including the planning of exhibitions and art and cultural activities management.

Other possible career options include working in school- and academic textbook publishing, in editing/proof-reading departments of publishing companies, in radio, television and newspaper editing departments, in PR and web agencies, in libraries and archives, with international organisations and in cultural fields.

It is important to start early during the degree programme to gain practical work experience in relevant organisations. In this way students can promote themselves as competent professionals in practice and make important professional contacts. The likelihood of finding a good position is definitely heightened if the student is flexible when it comes to commuting or even moving abroad. Good English language skills are particularly important when it comes to the international job market.
