Mathematics

Teaching at Secondary Schools

Mathematik – Lehramt an Gymnasien

Description

Subject Studies
Apart from acquiring mathematical fundamental knowledge (linear algebra, stochastics, geometry), the programme provides the opportunity of attending advanced lectures of mathematics within the framework of the combination module.

Subject-related Didactics
In the module Fundamentals of Teaching and Learning, the students continuously develop the methodological fundamentals of good Mathematics lessons. These skills are directly applied to the Practical Phases and are enhanced throughout additional methodological components of the program. The combination module mentioned above builds bridges between advanced mathematics and teaching mathematics in schools.

Special Features

Teachers need both specialist knowledge in their subjects and pedagogical skills. The semester course schedule (in the next paragraph) provides information on the subject knowledge required for the programme.

If you are wondering whether a teacher training course is the right thing for you at all, if you would like to learn more about a teacher's day-to-day work and whether you can cope with the demands of the profession, you can turn to the Eignungsberatung (aptitude counselling) of the Centre for Teacher Education.

The Teaching at Secondary Schools (Gymnasium) programme prepares the students for the teaching profession at Secondary Schools from grades 5 to 13. It consists of two subjects, the Grundwissenschaften and the MINT-orientierter interdisziplinärer Vernetzungsbereich (MINT= Mathematik, Informatik, Naturwissenschaften, Technik). With an orientation internship, an in-company internship as well as Practical Phases in school and Extracurricular Teaching Practical Studies the programme is quite practice-oriented.

Additionally, complementary studies for a third subject (Ergänzungsstudium Lehramt) are possible.

Teachers at Secondary Schools do not only teach their subjects but work within a greater pedagogical and organisational framework. They find positions not only at grammar schools (“Gymnasien”), but in different sectors of the widespread school system.

Valid statements on the future career perspectives are not easy to be made since they depend on a variety of factors, for example the range of subjects a teacher is able to teach. Other factors include the overall demographic development, political decisions and administrative regulations.
