Studying with a disability

Coping with studying and a disability or chronic illness requires a lot of organizational effort, time, money and self-awareness on the part of those affected. A series of issues need to be clarified as soon as possible as a prerequisite for successful study. The TU aims to actively support students in all matters. These pages provide preliminary information and contact details.

  • At TU Darmstadt there is a responsible for disability issues who ensures that the particular needs of disabled and chronically ill students are taken into consideration across all areas of the university – structural and technical measures, the teaching and learning experience, counselling and advice. This person provides assistance and support in resolving key issues (including modifications to the degree programme and examinations, accessibility to university buildings).
  • TU Darmstadt's Central Student Counseling Service (ZSB) provides information and advice about the course structure, requirements and the general study conditions at the university. They also provide advice on personal and psychosocial issues. The academic support services within the various departments will provide additional information about the chosen subject.
  • If you have questions about the buildings and/or information technology, please contact the team working on the “Studying with a disability”project (in German).
  • Student Affairs (Studierendenwerk) advises students on social and financial matters associated with studying.

People with reduced mobility

TU Darmstadt has restricted access in some areas.

Information about the accessibility of individual buildings at the Lichtwiese and Stadtmitte campuses can be obtained from the member of staff responsible for disability issues . If required, a joint on-site visit can be made. The relevant member of staff will attend to any specific adjustments as necessary. Please therefore contact us as soon as possible.

Deaf students

It is advisable to contact lecturers in a timely manner in order to clarify technical options or to ensure that manuscripts can be provided in good time, for example.

Chronic, temporary, physical health problems

People affected by these issues are asked to inform the department or responsible member of staff in good time in order to clarify possible modifications.

In accordance with section 3, paragraph 4 of the Hessen Higher Education Act, universities are to take into consideration the particular requirements of students with disabilities. Corresponding measures appropriate to the disability should be taken to ensure that the degree programme and examinations are delivered at a level approaching the baseline conditions.

It is advisable to liaise with the examination board and examiner in good time and, if applicable, to make use of the support offered by the member of staff responsible for disability issues.

Modifications for which applications are necessary may include: Written additions to oral examinations for deaf students with speech impediments, extensions for assignments/papers and extra time in written examinations, provision of amanuenses, modifications to external work placement/internship requirements.
